Celebrating a Wonderful Start to the 2024 School Year!
As we reflect on the first week of the 2024 school year, we are filled with joy and pride at the wonderful beginning we've had at St Joseph's. It's been a week brimming with excitement, new beginnings, and community spirit.
Our students from Years 1 to 6 returned to school on Monday, ready to embark on another year of learning and growth. Their ability to quickly adapt to classroom routines and engage with their lessons has been remarkable. Throughout the week, it's been a pleasure to visit classrooms and listen to the holiday stories shared by our students.
Tuesday marked a special milestone for our youngest learners as we welcomed the Kindergarten class of 2024. The Kindergarten Welcome Assembly and Morning Tea proved a heartwarming occasion, bringing together students, parents, carers, grandparents, and staff. A special acknowledgement goes to Mrs. Carlie Dedal, Mrs. Kristan Nichols, Ms. Amy McCormick, Mrs. Holly Walker-Thompson, and all the staff who played a role in making the day a success, ensuring that the smiles lasted from morning till the end of the day.
This week, we also had the privilege of listening to the Year 6 students deliver their inspiring Student Leadership Speeches. We would like to extend our congratulations to each student who participated, and we are excited to celebrate those who have been elected to lead their peers.
Please join us in congratulating the following students:
Ministry Leaders:
- Mission Leaders: Tanvika Hari, Gypsy Sams, Alyssa Donaghue and Jaidah Stevens
- Stewardship Leaders: Daya Jones, Lachlan Wilson, Hardy Fletcher and Levi Knight
- Well-Being Leaders: Max Zurillo, Isabella Fede, Logan Higgins and Braxton Galbraith
House Leaders:
- Grevillea: Charlise Dollery and Logan Daniels
- Callistemon: Eadie Whatson and Oliver Hallum
- Melaleuca: Zarli Jolley and Heath Wheeler
Our 2024 School Captains, Ministry Leaders and House Leaders will be formally recognised at the Opening School Mass on Friday, 16th February at 12 pm.
Despite the unpredictable weather at our School Swimming Carnival, the spirit of competition and camaraderie remained unaffected. A huge thank you to Mr. Michael Marshall, Mrs. Bec Faddy, and all the staff and parent volunteers who contributed to the success of the event. The enthusiasm and sportsmanship displayed by our students were truly inspiring, and we commend our new House Leaders for their leadership throughout the day.
We are also delighted to welcome new students to the St Joseph's family: Mariam Lyons (Year 2), Lyle Lyons (Year 5), and Eden Christensen (Year 1). We trust that they have settled in comfortably during their first week at St. Joseph's and have had ample opportunities to forge new friendships.
A warm welcome is extended to our new staff members: Mrs. Jane Egan, our new Student Wellbeing Officer and Teachers Assistant; Mrs. Holly Walker-Thompson, joining us as a Teachers Assistant; and Mr. Joshua Wright, our Indigenous Education Worker. Each brings a wealth of experience and passion to their roles, and we are blessed to have them as part of our team.
As we look ahead, we are filled with anticipation for the year to come. We are committed to nurturing a supportive and engaging learning environment for all our students, and we thank you, our parents and carers, for your continued support and partnership.
Parent Information Night
At the beginning of each new school year, we like to connect with and keep parents as informed as possible about your child’s classroom routines, learning and events. We will have a Parent Information Night for each class on Wednesday 21st February (week 4). Each Class Teacher will present a 30 minute talk on topics such as their classroom routines, expectations, curriculum content and communication in each of the classrooms. Please see the times for the class sessions below. We understand that some families will have students in the classes with sessions on at the same time so we will provide handouts. We will also provide a sausage sizzle for all families with the costs covered by the school. We hope to see as many families as possible in attendance to start the year off in great partnership in learning.
Parent Information Night Wednesday 21st February
4:30-5:15 K, Yr1, Yr5, Yr6 Class Information sessions
5:30-6:15 Yr2, Yr3, Yr4 Class Information sessions
In the week following this Parent Information Night, we will be offering ‘Parent to Teacher’ meetings for any parents who would like to talk to your child’s Class Teacher about your child and how they learn best and any wellbeing or other matters the Teacher will need to know about your child. Parents with students who have additional needs and for Indigenous students we will contact you to invite you to a meeting with relevant staff around this time as well so please do not use the booking system. We will send out the booking information for general meetings very soon.

Family Pool Night
Save the date for our first social gathering of the year on Tuesday, 5th March, at Kendall Pool for our Family Family Pool Night. This is a great opportunity to reconnect with other families at the school, mingle with our school staff and meet and welcome new families to our school community. More details about this event, including costs, will be communicated shortly. We hope to see as many families as possible come along to a fun and fantastic family night!
Best wishes from the leadership team
ASH WEDNESDAY
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and lasts 40 days leading up to Easter. Lent is a time for Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. Students will learn about Lent in their Religious Education Lessons and our Mission Leaders will talk to the school about Project Compassion, our Catholic Social Justice initiative that we undertake every Lent.
Catholics and non-Catholic are invited to attend Ash Wednesday Mass next week in the Parish church.
Something that parents tell us sets our school apart is the sense of family and belonging. Over the years we have moved to a class-parent model that not only supports the classroom teacher, but also supports the parents and families come together outside of school.
Over the last few years, the school has transitioned to having a few class parents to share this load in every class and the feedback is that people love being part of something, even if they can't always attend.
At the parent-teacher information evening (or before), the class teacher will ask for volunteers to be class parents. The teacher will choose at least one of these volunteers as a class parent to liaise with over the year. On top of that, a few other parents will form a Class Parent Group in each year to help drive "friend-raising" between students and their families.
In 2023 St Joseph's Primary School P&F Association dissolved and its place the St Joseph's School Community Group was formed as the parent representative body of this school.
The class parents will be part of the Friendraising component of the new St Joseph's School Community Group which has 4 main strands: Friend-Raising, Fund-Raising, Parent Education and Special Projects.
If you would like to be one of our Class Parents this year, please email maria.wilson@lism.catholic.edu.au
