As we wrap up another busy week at the start of the school year, we want to share the joyous celebrations and events that have brought our school community together.
On Tuesday, we embraced the spirit of Shrove Tuesday, in the distribution of pancakes to all our students. It was a delight to see the smiles on our students' faces as they enjoyed their pancakes. A huge thank you to Mrs. Holly Walker-Thompson and the Year 6 Mission Leaders for their wonderful facilitation of this Christian tradition.
The sense of unity continued into Wednesday as the entire school gathered at the church for the Ash Wednesday Mass, marking the beginning of Lent with reflection and togetherness. Thank you to Fr Michael for celebrating this mass, teaching the children about the start of Lent and helping our school captains to distribute the Ashes. Thank you also to the Parish Choir and Parishioners who made the Mass very special.
Our week of communal spirit culminated on Friday with the Opening School Mass. It was a day of significant milestones: our school leaders were honoured with their leadership badges, symbolising their commitment and responsibility for the year ahead. Additionally, we extended a warm and official welcome to our new kindergarten students and new staff, embracing them into our school family. The Choir enhanced our music ministry and we were so proud of all the students for their participation in the mass.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Mrs Maria Wilson for her exceptional coordination of both masses. Her dedication and hard work ensured that these events were not only successful but also meaningful for our students, staff, and the wider school community.
2024 School Annual Improvement Goals
As we look forward to the upcoming year, we are excited to share with you our School Annual Improvement Goals for 2024. These goals are a reflection of our commitment to providing a nurturing and engaging learning environment that fosters the growth and development of every student.
Mission
- To enhance student leadership in faith formation initiatives.
We aim to enhance student leadership in faith formation initiatives. By the end of 2024, we envision our students taking a more active role in leading and participating in activities that deepen their spiritual journey and understanding.
- To improve student engagement in Religious Education
Another key Mission goal is to improve student engagement in Religious Education. We believe that by making these lessons more interactive and relevant, we can inspire interest and participation in this vital aspect of our school's curriculum.
Learning and Teaching
- To increase growth and achievement in Mathematics, specifically additive and multiplicative thinking
In the Learning and teaching domain, we are setting our sights on increasing growth and achievement in Mathematics, with a particular focus on additive and multiplicative thinking. Our dedicated staff will be implementing innovative strategies and resources to ensure that all students can excel in these critical areas of mathematics.
Pastoral Care
- To develop a whole school approach to Pastoral Care focusing on student well-being and belonging.
Recognising the importance of student well-being and belonging, we will be developing a whole school approach to Pastoral Care. Our goal is to create an environment where every student feels valued, supported, and connected to our school community.
We are confident that with the collective efforts of our staff, students, and you, our valued parents and carers, we will achieve these goals and continue to enhance the educational experience at our school. We look forward to your support and collaboration as we embark on this exciting journey together.
Parent Information Night
At the beginning of each new school year, we like to connect with and keep parents as informed as possible about your child’s classroom routines, learning and events. We will have a Parent Information Night for each class on Wednesday 21st February (week 4). Each Class Teacher will present a 45 minute talk on topics such as their classroom routines, expectations, curriculum content and communication in each of the classrooms. Please see the times for the class sessions below. We understand that some families will have students in the classes with sessions on at the same time so we will provide handouts. We will also provide a sausage sizzle for all families with the costs covered by the school. We hope to see as many families as possible in attendance to start the year off in great partnership in learning.
Parent Information Night Wednesday 21st February
4:30-5:15 K, Yr1, Yr5, Yr6 Class Information sessions
5:30-6:15 Yr2, Yr3, Yr4 Class Information sessions

In week 5 following this Parent Information Night, we will be offering ‘Parent to Teacher’ meetings for any parents who would like to talk to your child’s Class Teacher about your child and how they learn best and any wellbeing or other matters the Teacher will need to know about your child. Parents with students who have additional needs and for Indigenous students we will contact you to invite you to a meeting with relevant staff around this time as well so please do not use the booking system. The booking information and link for general meetings will be sent out next Wednesday evening.

The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading in students and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read and read more widely.
Kinder, Year 1 and 2 will complete the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge as a whole class at school. Students in years 3-6 can complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge individually. The students will receive information next week in their Library time. Students must record books they've read with Bec or bring in a note signed by parents with a list of the books read.
We have lots of books from the PRC booklist in our Library.

Something that parents tell us sets our school apart is the sense of family and belonging. Over the years we have moved to a class-parent model that not only supports the classroom teacher, but also supports the parents and families come together outside of school.
Over the last few years, the school has transitioned to having a few class parents to share this load in every class and the feedback is that people love being part of something, even if they can't always attend.
At the parent-teacher information evening (or before), the class teacher will ask for volunteers to be class parents. The teacher will choose at least one of these volunteers as a class parent to liaise with over the year. On top of that, a few other parents will form a Class Parent Group in each year to help drive "friend-raising" between students and their families.
In 2023 St Joseph's Primary School P&F Association dissolved and its place the St Joseph's School Community Group was formed as the parent representative body of this school.
The class parents will be part of the Friendraising component of the new St Joseph's School Community Group which has 4 main strands: Friend-Raising, Fund-Raising, Parent Education and Special Projects.
If you would like to be one of our Class Parents this year, please email maria.wilson@lism.catholic.edu.au
