NAIDOC Week Celebrations
On Wednesday, we celebrated NAIDOC week. It was a day filled with joy, learning and engagement with Indigenous culture, thanks to the collective efforts of many in our school community.
Special acknowledgment goes to Josh Wright, our Indigenous Education Worker, whose tireless efforts and planning ensured an enriching cultural experience for all our students. We would also like to extend our congratulations to all our Indigenous students for their contributions during the liturgy.
Our thanks also extends to the Indigenous Education Workers and the secondary students from our other Hastings Catholic Regional schools, as well as our ex-students, community members and parent volunteers. Their involvement added an extra layer of community spirit and was greatly appreciated by everyone in attendance.
Lastly, we would like to thank all our staff members who embraced the spirit of NAIDOC Week with open arms and enthusiasm. Their dedication in promoting and celebrating Indigenous culture is truly commendable and was key to making this whole school event a resounding success.
Tell Them From Me Survey Results
Over the last month, the leadership team has been analysing the Tell Them From Me surveys. This data gives us great insight into our school performance, highlighting our strengths and areas for improvement. Over 70 families completed the survey, which is an excellent sample size that enhances the accuracy of our findings.
Some of the key highlights have been in learning and well-being, where students have indicated great improvement in “interest and motivation” as well as “effort” and “positive relationships”. Our school is sitting well above national norms in most areas surveyed.
The parent survey showed excellent results in four areas, including “Parents Feel Welcome,” “Inclusive School,” “Safety at School,” and “School supports positive behaviour.” Parents also indicated strong results in the school's Mission and Catholic life, and 75% of families gave the school 10/10 when asked how likely they would recommend it to a friend or colleague.
We understand that the quality of the school is directly linked to the dedication of those involved, so thank you to all our families, students, staff, and community members who make our school so wonderful.
Year 3&4 Retreat
Last Monday, Year 3 joined St Joseph’s Wauchope in a special retreat to kick off their Confirmation Unit and to begin preparations for the Catholic students who will make their Sacrament of Confirmation on Monday, 16th September. It was a wonderful day of learning, fun and making friends.
Year 4 joined St Joseph’s Port Macquarie and St Joseph’s Wauchope for Accendere, the first of 6 retreats designed for students in the Lismore Diocese from years 4-10. Students were led by our Youth Ministry Officers, our Regional Ministry Assistants and our CSYMA students in Year 10 at Regional college. It was fabulous to watch our students thriving in these groups and learning about how to be a good friend. As usual, our students' behaviour at both venues was commendable and all students showed excellent maturity and participation.
New Curriculum Published
Last week, the Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and Early Learning released the final suite of new K–6 syllabuses, directly to teachers and other education stakeholders who have been a part of their development.
The event was a celebration of the collaborative efforts across the school sectors.
The new syllabuses are carefully sequenced, coherent, knowledge-explicit and give teachers clarity on what needs to be taught.
Start exploring the new syllabuses and the support materials:
Resources for parents and carers, as well as new Professional Development courses, will be shared when available.
We will begin professional learning and implementation of these syllabuses over the next two years until all schools will be required to teach the new syllabuses from 2027.
Best wishes from the leadership team

Please note we are waiting on Tennis NSW to confirm if we are allowed 3 teams for the Year 5&6 Todd Woodbridge Cup. We have 28 students nominate but may only be able to take 16-18 students. The date has also changed for the stage 3 event. It is now Monday 19th August.
NEW TROUSERS - Uniform Update
After parent feedback at our School Community Group meetings on the formal gaberdine trousers, the school sought a second option for long pants to suit other body types. This week our new trousers have arrived. These trousers are made by Scags and suit longer legs. They are available to purchase through Flexischools or the office. These pants can be worn every day including sports days.
Can my child wear the old uniform?
The uniform deadline for all students to be in the new uniform is January 2025. As the Scags trousers are almost identical to previous uniforms, any navy coloured Scags branded trousers in good condition may be worn without the SJPL embroidery until January 2026. At this time it is expected that parents will have moved to the new stock. We trust that this allowance will support our families.
We are all very excited to announce that we will be putting together this year bi-annual Creative Arts Showcase! This is a whole school performance where all students from kindergarten to year 6 are involved in dancing, singing, acting and art displays as we showcase our student’s talents, interests and learning in the Creative Arts. We have performed many memorable Productions in past years. This year, we will have a range of performances and art on display around the theme of ‘celebrating cultural influences from around the world’. This theme is inspired by some of the many cultures we have within our school community and the unity and celebration of the Olympics. Each class will be performing a dance that has been influenced by a culture or style from somewhere in the world. Drama and dance performances selected from our Eisteddfod competition teams as well as our Choir and Digi kids will also perform. An art exhibition of a similar theme will be on display and all the behind the scenes will be coordinated by our Year 6 students. Our Performances are always an exciting time for our students, families and the wider community to be entertained and see what an incredibly talented and joyous bunch of students we have! The shows will be during week 9 of this term.
Monday 16th and Tuesday 17th September: Whole School rehearsals
Wednesday 18th September: Matinee Show 12pm
Thursday 19th September: Afternoon Show 3:30pm and Evening Show 5:30pm
We require all students to be available for these rehearsals and show performances so please make sure you let your classroom teacher know if your child is going to be unavailable for any reason.
Tickets will be available for each show from week 5 at a cost of $10 each. This covers some of the cost of costumes, props, staging, and lighting hire. All parents and extended friends and family are invited to attend. We offer complimentary special invitation tickets to our new Kindergarten students, parishioners, preschoolers, nursing home residents, and some special guests to particular shows. Stay tuned for more updates along the way.
Yours in Creative Arts

Our next School Community Group Meeting is coming up in week 3. Last term we surveyed families to find a suitable time for the meeting and the most popular time was Tuesday 6th August at 3:30pm. We will trial this time. We hope many of you can join us in the Library. Zumba is on in the hall at the same time.
Agenda items can be sent through to the office before the meeting or by going to the suggestion box on our school website: Suggestion Box
On Thursday 8th August Janita Thomson from Parent Assembly will also be running a parent workshop just after drop off on "Emotional Intelligence". This workshop has been received really well by families in other schools. Please register your interest here by opening the flyer and clicking the link.
