Kindergarten Enrolment Interviews/ School Tours
It has been wonderful meeting some of our prospective 2023 Kindergarten students this week. It is a highlight of the year to have this early insight into our new students' unique personalities, meet their families, and spend time with those who are already part of our school community.
This week, we also held Kindergarten school tours for new and existing families. We felt very proud to show families our great learning environments and play areas our school offers. The preschoolers who attended also enjoyed exploring the Kindergarten classroom spaces and the different outdoor areas. 2023 Kindergarten Interviews will continue next week. If you know of any families hoping to enrol their child in Kindergarten next year, please ensure that they contact the School Office right away to book an interview time.
Thank you to P & F Committees
Volunteering your time to be part of our Parent and Friends committees and other volunteer roles within the school supports our children to have wonderful school experiences.
We would like to acknowledge the work that has gone into organising the upcoming school disco. The committee have met for numerous hours to plan for a fun, exciting and safe night. We thank them for their wonderful work so far and are looking forward to a great night. If you are able to volunteer, the committee are still looking for more helpers to make the night a success.
Similarly, thank you to the uniform committee who have been undertaking the huge task of reviewing our school uniform, surveying students and families and researching viable options for our school. Your support in this area is much appreciated.
Next week, our Class Parent representatives will meet to look at social dates for terms 3 & 4, and our P&F will also have their Term 2 meeting. All parents and friends are welcome to join us on Wednesday night in the Library for this meeting.
Reports and Interviews Term 2
It is that time of year when teachers are busily preparing written reports and interview times to inform you of your child’s progress in learning at school. You will receive your child’s Semester One written report on Friday 24th June via the parent portal. Please ensure you have registered and can access this system or contact us for assistance.
You will also be invited to attend a Parent Teacher interview to talk in more detail with your child’s class teacher about the report and any other questions you may have. These interviews will be booked through School Interviews online and will be offered at various times during week 10. Please click this link http://www.schoolinterviews.com.au/code/dqqwj to book your interview time/s. We look forward to sharing with you your child’s progress in learning.
Hairstyles
There have been a few hairstyles come to school that are not within the school uniform policy. Coloured hair and shaved patterns in short hair are not acceptable. Please leave these hairstyles for the school holidays.
Early Arrival before 8:30
School supervision starts at 8:30 am. Band students will arrive at 8:00 am only on band days. All other students are to remain under their parents' or carers' supervision until 8:30 or utilise the before-school service from GOWRIE. It may be helpful to note that the NSW government offers 50-100% rebates on these fees as well as a bonus of $500 to cover out-of-pocket before and after school care fees.
New syllabus for Kindergarten to Year 2
As education evolves with changes in the world, the Board of Studies regularly reviews and updates syllabus documents that schools are mandated to teach from to keep learning future-focused.
Next year, a new Mathematics and English syllabus will be rolled out for classes in K-2. As such, our school staff will begin engaging in learning about the new knowledge behind the syllabus and content within the syllabus in Mathematics next week. This learning will continue for us into Term 3 where we will gain further understanding of the new English syllabus.
The new syllabus for years 3-6 will then begin to be rolled out as well. We hope to keep parents informed of the new changes along the way so that you are able to best support your child’s learning at home.
National Reconciliation Week
This week we acknowledged the commencement of National Reconciliation Week which is a time for all Australians to learn about shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.
Some of our students at St Joseph’s planned and delivered a prayer for reconciliation during our Monday morning assembly where they informed their peers on how each of us can ‘Be Brave. Make Change.’ This is not only the theme for Reconciliation Week 2022 but a challenge to all Australians to be ‘Be Brave’ and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so that we can ‘Make Change’ for the benefit of all Australians.
Teachers also facilitated activities around the theme of ‘Be Brave. Make Change.’ in their classrooms throughout the week including rich discussions and creating artworks to spread the message of reconciliation and the value it has for each of us. Thank you to Ms Lynda King, Mrs Sonya Steep and Mrs Lou O'Neil for working with students to plan the assembly and organise classroom activities.
Best wishes from the leadership team

During Tuesday lunchtimes, the Indigenous Students at our school are gathering for some Cultural time. The students voted on the name Didjii Kids. We will spend time doing different activities that will enrich our strong Indigenous Culture, strengthen connections with one another and make plans to celebrate our culture with the whole school. This week, our group led a special prayer morning for Reconciliation Week. We look forward to sharing more of our work together like this in the future.

Well done to our amazing Choir who traveled down to Taree today to perform in the Eisteddfod. The Choir did a fantastic job and represented St Joseph's Laurieton so beautifully. See below for their amazing report!

Continuing their investigation into water, Year 1 and 2 completed a Scientific experiment during the week on how to make dirty water clean and determine which materials would make the best water filters. Year 1 determined that paper towel would make the best water filter out of the materials they experimented with but also determined that despite being clearer, the water still isn't clean enough to drink!
Dear parents and carers,
