Leadership Report

A Warm Welcome to Our Kindergarten Class of 2025!

Monday marked a special milestone for our youngest learners as we welcomed the Kindergarten class of 2025. The Kindergarten Welcome Assembly and Morning Tea proved a heartwarming occasion, bringing together students, parents, carers, grandparents, and staff. A special acknowledgement goes to Mrs Kristan Nichols, Mrs Natalie Hurrell, Mrs Jessica Larkin, Ms Hilary Burch, and all the staff who contributed to making the day a success and ensuring that the smiles lasted from morning until the end of the day.

Swimming Carnival

After a week of unpredictable weather, our swimming carnival was blessed with sunshine, resulting in a wonderful display of competition and camaraderie. A huge thank you to Mrs Nat Hurrell, Mrs Bec Faddy, and all the staff and parent volunteers who contributed to the event's success. Our students' enthusiasm and sportsmanship were truly inspiring, and we commend our new House Leaders for their exceptional leadership throughout the day. Once again, thank you to everyone who joined and supported the carnival, making it a memorable day for our school community.

Upcoming Parent Information Night and Parent-to-Teacher Chats

We look forward to welcoming parents and carers at the Parent Information Night on Wednesday, February 19th, as well as during the Parent-to-Teacher chats scheduled for next week, starting Thursday and continuing into Week 4. Each teacher will deliver a 30-minute presentation covering classroom routines, expectations, curriculum content, and communication processes. Additionally, the 'Parent to Teacher' meetings provide a valuable opportunity for you to discuss your child’s learning preferences, well-being, and other important matters directly with their class teacher. For more details, please refer to the Compass News feed sent out to families on Tuesday, February 11th.

Opening School Mass

Families are warmly invited to our opening school mass on Friday, 21st February, at 9:30 am. Year 6 students will be inducted into their Leadership roles and Kindergarten will have a special welcome.

Family Night - Save the Date - Saturday 1st March 5-8pm

On Saturday 1st March, we will be holding our annual Family Night. This is a great opportunity to meet new people and mingle. After listening to parent feedback, we are hoping to trial a new format, which will include a family parish mass followed by activities, a silent disco and a shared dinner back at school. We are still finalising the details, so if you would like to contribute your wonderful ideas, please reach out to Maria Wilson or Fiona Hayward through the office.

Best wishes from the leadership team

National Apology Day

On Thursday, classes acknowledged National Apology Day during their prayer time.
February 13th marks the anniversary of when the Australian Government, led by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, in 2008,  apologised and said sorry to  Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for the Stolen Generations.

By acknowledging the National Day of Apology with other Australians, we are helping the healing journey of the Stolen Generation people and are being part of a brighter future for all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Introducing Entrepreneurial Education (EE)!

We are thrilled to introduce Entrepreneurial Education (EE) to our Year 5 and 6 students! EE will encompass two highly valued programs incorporated into the learning and teaching curriculum over the course of the year. These programs will be co-taught by Mrs Fiona Hayward and Mrs Alfina Jackson.

For Semester 1, we will be launching STEM MAD. Traditionally this program has been offered as a lunch club but due to the high quality learning and level of skills gained by students who have previously participated in this, we have decided to include this in our curriculum. STEM MAD engages students in hands-on, project-based learning experiences that integrate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) with entrepreneurial thinking. Students will be challenged to identify real-world problems and develop innovative solutions, encouraging them to think critically and creatively while applying their STEM knowledge. STEM MAD will nurture their problem-solving abilities and foster a spirit of innovation.

Building on the foundation laid in Semester 1, we will be introducing $20 Boss in Semester 2. This program will empower students to take their ideas to the next level by giving them a small seed fund ($20) to start their own micro-business. They will learn about all aspects of running a business, from developing a business plan, pitching their ideas and marketing their product or service. $20 Boss provides a real-world, hands-on experience in entrepreneurship, allowing students to learn by doing and develop valuable skills in financial literacy, communication, and teamwork.

We are excited about the opportunities these programs will offer our students and look forward to sharing their progress with you throughout the year!

School Community Group

Dear Parents and carers,

We are excited to invite you to become an integral part of our School Community Group!
As a school, we deeply value the partnership between parents and educators, and we believe that your involvement plays a crucial role in the success and growth of our school community.

By joining the School Community Group, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to discussions, share your unique perspectives, and collaborate with fellow parents and staff to support our students’ learning and development. EOI- Class Parents!

Dear parents,

Please complete the following link to nominate yourself as a class parent. Being a class parent is a great way to become involved in our wonderful school community!

LINK

Each year class parents work together within their year group and sometimes across grades to coordinate and support a series of friendraising activities throughout the year. Ideally we like to have at least two class parents per grade.

The role of the class parent ‘friendraising’ group is to:

  1. Support our families to make connections and friendships with other Joey’s families, creating an inclusive environment where no one feels left out
  2. Encourage involvement in the life of the school community
  3. Promote the great things that happen at St Joseph’s
  4. Support the class teachers, staff and school
  5. Encourage families to read the newsletter as the main source of information
  6. Support families in times of need or celebration

Some of the ways class parents do this include:

  • Planning social events external to school throughout the year. Examples include family days out (such as picnics, bbqs), mum’s nights and parent events (dinner, golf, high tea), kids catch ups (Stoney Aqua Park, pool, skatepark), Year 6/Kindy buddy days etc
  • Managing the class Messenger thread
  • Organising cards and/or gifts for special occasions (new baby, teacher’s birthday etc)
  • Supporting families in difficult circumstances (get well cards and meal trains)

Once nominations have been received, I will organise a meeting for class parents to meet each other and begin to book dates for the 2025 calendar. If you could please nominate by Tuesday the 18th February.

Thanking you,

Fiona Hayward (Class Parent Coordinator)

What's Been Happening

Kindergarten First Week

Our kindergarten students at St. Joseph's are off to a wonderful start as they embark on their school journey. They have quickly adapted to their new classroom environment, enthusiastically learning and following important school routines. From settling into morning activities to participating in group lessons, the children are developing a sense of structure and responsibility. We are so proud of them and we hope they have a big rest on the weekend, ready for another exciting week next week.

Kindergarten Scienece

Our curious kindergartners stepped outside for a hands-on science adventure! They eagerly explored the world around them, searching for living and non-living things. They carefully observed different plants and insects, marvelling at the wonders of nature. Along the way, they also discovered rocks, sticks, and leaves, learning to identify what makes something living and non-living.
